たとえば音楽学校でバイオリンを学んでいる生徒を、ソリストになりそうなグループと、プロオケでやっていけそうなグループ、そしてプロオケは無理でも音楽の先生になりそうな３グループにわけて練習量を比較するという調査を行うと興味深い事実がわかるのだそうです。

全てのグループでバイオリンを始めた平均的な年齢は変わらず、「スタートが早かった」効果はグループでみると無視できました。それに対して練習量は、他のグループは同じ年齢で 8000 時間、あるいは 4000 時間にしか達していなかったのに対して、ソリストになりそうなグループは計10000時間ほど、一週間の練習量も他のグループよりも飛躍的に高かったのです。

面白いのは、彼の調査によると「練習をせずに天才的才能を発揮する」人も、「いくら練習をしても上達しない人」の両者も見られなかったのだというところです。
