　ミシュランの評価は正しいのだろう。だが一方で同社は、主要事業を盛り上げるために格付けを甘くしたと批判する声もある。

　「簡単なことだ。日本人をほめて、心をつかみ、財布のひもを緩めてタイヤを買ってもらうこと。それが狙いだ」 — 元ミシュランの調査員で「L’Inspecteur se Met à Table（『裏ミシュラン―ヴェールを剥がれた美食の権威』）」”の著者、パスカル・レミ氏はこう語る。

　インタビューでレミ氏は、ミシュランは02年からガイドブックを海外市場で同社の知名度を上げるために利用するようになり、それにともなって評価基準を下げたと語った。レミ氏とミシュランの契約は03年に終了している。

　これについてミシュランは、レミ氏は同社の戦略プランには関与しておらず、07年に日本版ガイドを発売するはるか前に調査員を辞めていると反論。広報担当者は、レミ氏の主張を事実無根と全面的に否定した。同氏の退職理由は明らかにしなかった。
